The Pregnant Look is in… even if you’re not

A pregnant friend of mine recently informed me that she doesn’t have to shop for maternity clothes, becuase all the styles today are loose and baggy, with empire waists and flowing designs.

Hmm, I thought, can it really be so? I did a little browsing and so it is! Maternity tops reign this season. This is great if you’ve got a tummy to accomodate. But not everyone is pleased with today’s fashions, including Germaine Cabe of the Arizona Republic.

“The Business section on Wednesday had an article entitled “Retailers struggle as apparel sales slow,” she reports. “Yes, we are in a recession. But we still need clothes to wear. Our fashion gods, however, have been designing the ugliest clothing for the past three years so that there’s nothing appealing to buy. The “maternity top” look is in… empire waists… prevail… They’re all slinky, slimy and in dizzying geometric patterns that could trigger an epileptic attack. Colors are about as muddy as the economy. Please bring back simple, classic styles in flattering colors that we might want to buy, even if our bank accounts are dwindling.”

Pregnancy is a wonderful thing… but as someone who gave birth 2 months ago, and is just starting to fit into my old clothes, I have to wonder… Why, oh why, would anyone want to wear clothes that make them look pregnant when they’re not?

A new maternity look: Pregnant cops get roomier uniforms

It used to be that when a female officers in the UK became pregnant, they were “immediately whisked off ‘operational duties’ to do office work where they could wear their own clothes,” according to the Daily Mail. Not any more! Now gal cops can get maternity trousers, black pinafore dresses and loose-fitting shirts that expand at the waist as the pregnancy progresses.

Liz Owsley, of the British Association of Women in Policing says: “More and more women are joining the force and increasingly they don’t want to be pulled off operational duties as soon as they become pregnant… women constables and sergeants don’t necessarily want to stop being with their teams and removing their uniform.”

A pregnant woman in a police uniform… I bet no one tries rubbing HER belly!

Get a better night’s sleep in comfy PJ’s

Getting a good night’s sleep when you’re pregnant is hard enough, but ill-fitting PJ’s can make you even more uncomfortable. When I’m pregnant, I usuall sleep in one of my husband’s T-shirts or sweatshirts, but I have found that my regular PJ bottoms, even the elasticized ones, would dig into my waist and leave an uncomfortable mark.

The Maternity Clothes Debate

The Celebrity Baby Blog quotes Halle Berry as saying, “I refuse to wear maternity clothes. Maybe when I’m 9 months I’ll have to.” The Blog then poses the flollowing questions: Did you refuse to wear maternity clothes? If you did, did you eventually have to give in?

Well, Halle Berry is only 4 months pregnant. When all you’ve got is a slightly protruding belly, it’s easy to imagine you can go on wearing stretchy non-maternity clothes to accomodate your new shape. Let’s see how she feels in 4 more months, when the tiny tummy is a huge, attention-grabbing entity with a life of its own!

Some of the readers on the Celebrity Baby Blog say that they just wore non-maternity clothes in larger sizes. That is something I don’t understand!! Whereas maternity clothes are made to be flattering to the pregnant figure, I think that wearing regular clothes in larger sizes will just make you look fat and sloppy. Besides, if you’re going to go out and buy new clothes anyway, why not get maternity clothes? You can find cute, affordable, comfortable maternity clothes that beat wearing oversized non-maternity any day.

Another commenter says, “When I was pregnant I dreaded the idea of wearing maternity clothes! The thought of panels and empire waists made me want to cry… but then by the 7th month when I didnt have any other choice, I learned to LOVE them! She will change her mind!”

I don’t see where the I-refuse-to-wear-maternity attitude will get her… she might be forced to eat her words!
